University of Nebraska
Prior to the 2013 football season, the University of Nebraska completed a massive East Stadium expansion on historic Memorial Stadium. The project not only expands seating to nearly 92,000, but also includes 50,000 square feet of laboratories conducting world-class research on concussions and athletic performance.
Jack Porter worked with architects The Clark Enerson Partners and the UNL athletic administration to develop environmental graphics and displays for the new east concourse and grand lobby. The architecture of this space is quite unique: the entire expansion was built as a new separate structure, which enabled the design to preserve the original east stadium façade including the beautifully engraved messages and the iconic Gate 20 domed entrance. With the original 1920’s architecture on one side and new the state-of-the-art expansion on the other, fans are presented with a balance of past and present as they travel the concourse.
The goal of the environmental branding was right in step with the architecture; honor the great achievements and traditions of Nebraska Football, while also celebrating a forward looking program whose story continues to grow. Signature features of the lobby include two custom millwork walls honoring every team in Nebraska’s football history, as well as a ceiling sculpture composed of red acrylic disks to artistically recreate the schools time honored tradition of releasing balloons upon every score. The story continues down the concourse with column displays illustrating the evolution of the UNL football uniform, banners of great players and coaches, and large reproductions bowl game program covers.
